Neurosurgery as a Career

Neurosurgeons are amongst the highest paid surgeons in the world, the closest competitors they have are their counterparts in cardiology. Neurosurgeons deal with the spine and the brain. Neurology is the science that relates to the central nervous system of the body.

To be a neurosurgeon is one of the most prestigious jobs in the world as well. It takes a lot to be a neurosurgeon; one of the most important qualities a neurosurgeon must possess is extremely steady hands.

The common areas that a neurosurgeon operates on are; all spines relate surgical procedures, which include slipped disk problems, severed spinal column and any other problem related to the spine and its related nerves. Our brain is the controlling organ of our body, the brain is a bundle of nerve endings which sends signals via our spine; which is an integral part of our central nervous system. Neurosurgeons operate on the brain for problems related to neurological disorders as well as problems in the brain itself; such problems could be brain damage, haemorrhaging and tumours in the brain.

The correct procedure to pursue a career in neuroscience is to study biology in the final year of school. This should be followed by a regular medical graduation [MBBS]. Upon completion of a regular medical course [MBBS] the applicant may then apply for residency in neurosurgery. While in residency the trainee neurosurgeon will receive guidance from experienced neurologists and neurosurgeons. Typically a neurosurgeon needs to complete a seven year residency program. Only residents that complete the program can then go on to become Neurosurgeons.

Neurosurgery residents cover a new and different topic during their residency program every year. The topics covered include: Neurosurgery ICU, Paediatric neurology, Brain and Spine injuries, Neuropathology, Neuro-radiology and Clinical Research. Of the seven years that the resident spends learning the different facets of neurology, he/she must also excel in written exams every year to be able to continue to the next level. This time of training is not only designed to teach the resident, but also for the resident to gather a vast amount of experience.

One of the best hospitals to do residency from for trainees is the All India Institute of Medical Science also known as AIIMS. Other hospitals where you can complete your residency from in India include “GB Pant Hospital Delhi” and “PGI Chandigarh”. Several private hospitals may also be considered as options.

The typical work schedule for a neurosurgeon involves, checking patients as the day begins, followed by attending/performing surgeries if any, attending theoretical classes, post-op checkups, and OPDs.

The amount of money a neurosurgeon can earn in the government sector is between 60,000 to 100,000 a month, in the private sector depending on which hospital or hospitals the neurosurgeon is affiliated with he or she can on in excess of 200,000 to 300,000 a month or more.
